Who Are the Nigerian Footballers Who Have Perished on the Field?
1. Bobsam Elejiko
In a fifth-tier encounter between K. Merksem S.C. and F.C. Kaart on November 13, 2011, Nigerian Bobsam Elejiko, then 30 years old, fainted on the field and was unable to be revived by medical personnel.
2. Sam Okwaraji
On August 12, 1989, the iconic Super Eagles of Nigeria midfielder lost his life during a World Cup qualifying match against Angola at the National Stadium in Lagos.
According to reports, the late Okwaraji passed away during the game’s final 10 minutes while Nigeria was winning by a goal to zero.
3. Endurance Idahor
Endurance Idahor, a Nigerian athlete who played for the Sudanese team El Merreikh, slumped and passed away on the way to the hospital on March 10, 2010, at the age of 25.
He had passed out during a league game in Omdurman against Al Amal.
4. Amir Angwe
Amir Angwe, another gifted football player from Nigeria, passed away on October 29, 1995. He had fallen at the Onikan National Stadium during the African Cup Winners semi-final game between Julius Berger of Nigeria and Maxaquene of Mozambique.
The player’s death at the age of 29 from a heart attack was verified.
5. David Oniya
On June 13, 2015, Nigerian football player David Faramola Oniya passed out three minutes into a friendly match between Kelantan and T-Team, his Malaysian club team. Syahrizan Mohd Zain, the club’s chief executive, reportedly said as follows to the Guardian:

Chineme Martins, a player for Nassarawa United in the Nigerian Football Premier League, collapsed on the field against Kastina United on March 8, 2020, when he was 23 years old. After being transported to the hospital, he was later declared dead.
7. John Ikoroma
According to reports, John Ikoroma, 17, had a heart attack and passed away while playing for a team in a trial match in the United Arab Emirates.
Prior to the game’s conclusion, John Ikoroma passed out while playing for Al-Wahda in a trial match against Kazakh Club Astona.

According to The Vanguard, on July 14, 2001, 26-year-old football player Charles Esheko had a heart arrest while playing for Bengal Mumbai Club in India against the Income Tax squad in the Harwood League. He eventually passed away in the hospital.
He passed out during the first half, but he was able to sit in a taxi and be taken to a hospital in Mumbai. However, he passed away there after having a second stroke. The Nigerian player has spent more than three years competing in the Asian country.
